AP Expectations—Students should be aware that there will be extensive reading, and that it must be completed in advance of the material being covered in class. You are expected to have a comprehensive understanding of all topics covered in the text, online resources, supplementary readings, and the classroom. The course is designed for mature, college-bound students with self-motivation and strong reading and writing skills. Students may be spending 45-90 minutes daily on reading or homework outside of class time.
Dignity & Empathy– Students will always show respect & dignity for themselves, one another, and the teacher. No name-calling, put downs, or slurs (even in jest). This includes language, behavior, or gestures that are obscene, offensive or simply unkind.
Cell Phones--Cell phones are not allowed in class unless I have given you permission. There may be time when it is appropriate to look up something on your phone or quietly listen to music, but I will make these instances clear. I respect the fact that you may need to make a phone call or reply to an urgent message and I expect that privilege will not be abused.
Absences--If you are absent, it is your responsibility to ask for make-up work, schedule make-up tests, etc. If you have an excused absence, you will have as many days as you were absent to make up homework/classwork. Tests and quizzes can only be made up before and after school, and you must make up tests/quizzes within three days of being out (unless you were absent for more than three days).
Tardy & Late--Attendance will be taken each class period. Students who arrive to class less than 10 minutes late will be marked late. Student who are more than 10 minutes late will be marked tardy. Students are expected to remain in class for the entirety of the period. If a student leaves class, without a pass, and is gone for more than 10 minutes they will be marked tardy. Students who are repeatedly late or tardy will be assigned the consequences and interventions outlined in the student handbook.
Late Work--Work in this class will be checked daily, but will be graded at the end of each unit. The late work policy is as follows:
Work can be turned in late up until the end of the chapter/unit (the day of the chapter test) for 80% credit.
The only assignment that may not be turned in late is current events.
Test Corrections--Students ARE allowed & encouraged to correct the multiple choice portion of any assessment. Students who score below and 80% can make corrections to their exam. Students will earn back a quarter of a point per question (4 questions missed=1 point back). Test corrections must be completed within three days of the test grade becoming available.
THE MOST IMPORTANT “POLICY”--You, the student, are a whole person and my top priority as a teacher. Due to the rigor of this course and the fact that you are often taking multiple rigorous courses on top of other school and community activities, a high degree of stress may develop. While stress is normal, it should never be suffocating. Your well-being matters more to me than any test score. You should know that my door is always open to you, and I am here to listen and provide as much support as I can. If the workload does become overwhelming, we can strategize about how to make things work and still accomplish the objectives of the course. You have a right to feel mentally & physically safe.
Cheating & Plagiarism--IHS has a strict academic integrity policy. I take cheating and plagiarism very seriously and do not make any exceptions to the school policies. Work together to learn, but do and take credit for your own work. Please refer to Student Conduct Expectations in the Student Handbook for further information regarding consequences/violations for 1st and 2nd offenses. Students will receive a failing grade or possibly a 0 on the assignment/test/project and parent will be notified. . If you ever have a question about citing sources in a paper or the kind of outside help you may receive, ask me ahead of time. Ignorance is not an excuse.
